UT3 review.

1. it's beautiful, frickn' beautiful.

2. it's fast, on my 8800 i feel like i am getting 200fps on full settings so i would expect it to play well on any machine with a 6800 and 256mb of video ram, the same machine that doom3 worked well on.

3. it's a first person shooter, and it plays like just about every other first person shooter out there. I am not even sure this marketplace has even innovated more than the windows operating system has over the same time period. When i play supreme commander, FLOW, wii sports, or many other games these days, 1st person shooters just do not get me all of that excited. I want something different like gravity bombs, holograms, or huge massive worlds to fight in. Huxley seems interesting for these reasons, and it looks just as pretty as UT3 because it uses the same engine.

4. I hear they put a crappy story in place for UT3. In a year that we are celebrating the 25th anniversary of blade runner, and decades of great science fiction that is still waiting to hit the big screen. I want to see stories come to life from books like snow crash, diamond age, "do androids dream of electric sheep?"

5. controls. I am so done with mouse keyboard interactions. heck the mouse is like 40 years old, and in computer decades(2 years) that is 20 decades or generations of computing. the keyboard is even older, can we please do something new, something that offers a higher definition experience. I just do not feel involved in the environment with a mouse and keyboard. I want dual grip, double rig wiimotes for everything or why not use visual motion detection engines like eye of judgment. we are never going to live in the future if we keep buying the same old stuff. when technology like this is running on the ps3, why the hell are we stilling using controllers at all? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LqAIKtDWab8 the wii spoiled me, and I DEMAND more engaging interface. where is the speech recognition or gesture recognition interfaces?

6. bots. UT3 may look great, but the bots use the same AI, and the only time they offer a challenge is when they get more accurate, rather than smarter. They still run into gun fire, forget to strafe while being machine gunned down, or anything resembling intelligence at all. I am really expecting the bar to be raise here a lot in the next 5 years. there is just not any fun at all in having a bot dis you, when you have just pummeled it the last 5 frags in a row, it seems so lame. with the amount of money we spend on games like UT, why cant they use some of the latest sexbot code and get an AI that can hold at best a weak conversation. Sexbots have been passing the turing test for years now. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turing_test

overall, i am probably the last person to ask about buying an FPS because i actually expect them to be innovative, and to excite my curiosity a bit, but that would be like asking for military intelligence as FPSes are designed to create a casual atmosphere to regress to prehistoric urges of mindless violence. I would rather play a game where thought can out pace the best finger twitchers, or biggest guns, i tend to favor strategy games over games of skill. Once i realized that WoW was not a strategy game, but rather a temporal black hole, i had to give it up.

at this point i am more exited about mass effect, the new elder scrolls mmorpg, or some other game that has yet to fine my event horizon.

When will the Estates be available for gaming this weekend? Will there be a public computer available for Worms 2?

I just have a single nVidia GT8800, and I can handle all the new games at the "gobsmachingly beautiful" settings. The only exception so far has been certain instances in Hellgate where my system comes to an almost complete and total stop, but a) turned off AA and it's fine now and b) this is widely regarded as a problem with the game, not the hardware, and is slated to be fixed. Everything tells me that I'll have no problems making UT3 sing, I just need an opportunity to buy and play it.

And there's a problem with asking "has anyone done 'X' yet" questions, as those who have not done whatever 'x' is are in no position to know if anyone else has done it, meaning that only the people who have done 'x' can really respond. Thus, if the answer is 'no,' that answer will come across as frustrating silence.

Mac OSX had more documented security flaws in 2007 than Windows XP and Vista combined?

I hear about things, BioShock, Crysis, people are still raving about SC, Mass Effect, Call of Duty 4, Guitar Freaking Hero,I watch X-play, no mention of UT thus far. I get a video podcast delivered right to my ipod every day, and nothing UT has yet appeared. Not even the letters U and T back to back. But I guess I haven't been looking... Didn't think I needed a pith helmit and four days supply to find some info. Last time they did this in 2004 they had freaking pictures of guys with spraypainted bagles and a very unique demo. A little 'buzz'. You know...buzz?

But that still doesn't answer the question, have any of you run it? I am guessing the answer still is no.

In that penny-arcade they were talking about you killing your sister for spawn practice? That's a bit weird I think. I know what they are trying to do, but still, a little TMI if you ask me. I think the days of the LAN and the glorious days of the MEGA-LAN are dimming anyway. PC costs are just through the roof, and I don't have the dollar signs for 4 Nivia cards in SLI or whatever they are touting now, in order to run this stuff at a decent framerate.

I'm not sure, but my guess would be because you haven't looked? BU did their own review, and has linked most of the reviews done in the press at some point in the past.

You can also download the beta demo from them. Actually, I'm probably wrong about needing a new machine to play it. Supposedly, it scales even better than BioShock. If you can play BioShock (even I can play BioShock on my ancient gear), you can probably play UT3 in some fashion, at least that's the word on the interwebs.

OK, if it's so good, then why is this the only tangible information I have seen:

http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2007/12/19

is there a demo? has anyone actually RUN it? (anyone running crysis at over 25fps doesn't count, becuase they spent $2500+ just to bring it up to speed)

Uh, no, as I already suggested, everything I've heard leads me to believe it's actually quite good. The only real beef being the lack of maps compared to UT2k4, which is understandable, since they've ratcheted the graphics way up, and the relationship between graphics and gameplay tends to be inverse. But none of that changes the fact that I don't have the hardware, time, or money for it until May. ;)

OK fine. Obviously either it sucks, no one has played it, or both, considering the only response has been a correction. Note taken.

Sadly, I have not played it yet. I doubt my computer could do it justice. I plan on rectifying that after Japan, but in meantime I have no idea if it's good. It sounds good. I mean, they brought back the Enforcer!

Now, let's get down to the brass tax. When was UT2k3 released and why wasn't I told? Is it any good?

Adam, I guess this is for you since you are the only one I know that still lives near a CompUSA

http://articles.moneycentral.msn.com/Investing/Extra/CompUSAToCloseAllStores.aspx

COMPUSA will be closing all stores after deep discounts to move remaining inventory.
