Does this mean that this script will become inevitably lost, causing Spaceballs III, the search for the script for Spaceballs II (and the search for Spock, in case neither he nor his pants may be found).

By the way, no word on whether the title of the sequel will be Spaceballs 2:The Search for More Money!

Spaceballs the breakfast cereal, Spaceballs the flame-thrower, Spaceballs the SEQUEL!?!?!?!?

Mel Brooks is currently writing a sequel to Spaceballs due out the same time as Revenge of the Sith. Go to Ain't It Cool News for more info:

To bring some of you down a memory lane ride, Vivendi sold some of its core holdings to the NBC conglomerate, but elected to retain some of the "entertainment" businesses like the game companies.

GE/NBC got Universal, the associated movie studio(s) and the cable networks. Vivendi kept everything else (like the record company).

Ah, finally a topic to draw me out from beyond the great rim. I've heard of these download delivery manager services for software purchase and am in favor of such a method. That said, I firmly believe in actually burning a "backup CD" for legimate archiving purposes. Yeah, stick it to Vivendi. Die Die Die!!! And to think, if the French were either more greedy or moronic, they just might have placed those companies back in American hands during the recent NBC acquisitions. To bring some of you down a memory lane ride, Vivendi sold some of its core holdings to the NBC conglomerate, but elected to retain some of the "entertainment" businesses like the game companies. The Dynamix death was tragic, simply tragic. What is CATASTROPHIC is the recent canning of the Black Isle Group at Interplay. They brought us the great Fallout and Baldur's Gate series phenomenons. They are truly missed in my heart. Fuck off Vivendi, take that in your cognac and smoke it, you ethnocentric trash. There.... I'm... better... now.

Posted by: nearscape Posted on: Wednesday September 29 2004 4:27pm
proletariats of the spoo.

Those with their ears to the wired already know, but Valve and Vivendi Universal are suing the shit out of each other these days. The most important repercussion has been made abundantly clear by VUG lawyers: VUG has both the legal right and the will to delay Half-Life 2 another six months unless Valve concedes.

Here's the good news: you don't have to buy this game from VUG, if you plan on buying it at all anymore. Check out the Steam purchase options here:
www.hlfallout.net/viewnews.php/7470/

Now, I've never been big promoter of Steam because I'm tired of Valve's bullshit overall, but in this instance it offers a decidedly delicious opportunity. Buying through this mysterious "digital delivery" method not only includes Counter-Strike: Source (available now), but also provides a very real tool with which to hurt VUG. Learned colleagues may recall that VUG is not only The Man, but they have also fired everyone who ever worked at Dynamix and Sierra creating great games like Tribes, Alien vs. Predator, Kings Quest, etc. To top it off, they are French. Gentlemen, the path has never been more clear.

p.s. why would they say John had that piece when he didn't? I mean, either you do or you don't! It's not like you can 'kinda have' a CHINESE assault rifle. Why did they claim it was chinese? That makes it even more strange. It's not like it's, 'Yeah, John might have a piece.', it's 'Oh, yeah, he's got this chinese assault rifle he took off the chinese in Vietnam.' That's quite the story to just get 'wrong'. Wow. Perhaps he took a lession from Voltaire and Star Trek, and is in 'just make shit up' mode.

Update:

If anyone was expecting to use Hermes you will need to think of another plan. The only good it is for now, gaming wise, is 64-bit UT2004 as it is now a 64-bit Linux server.

Thank you, and have a nice day. :)

Just because I'm a fair man;

From my understanding, Kerry was not actually interviewed by Outdoor Life. Instead, it was a written correspondence that was actually answered by staffers, who got the facts wrong, as Kerry doesn't actually own such a rifle. Normally, I'd call this a BS explanation, but the Kerry campaign has been so screwed up, running around like a chicken with its head cut off, that it wouldn't be inconsistant.

As for costumes; the only thing I could kinda come as is an East German military something or other, as I don't have anything with which to dress up as Johny Courageous (unless he was a damned commie!).

Wow, crow, you're right. (I like the fact that they were driving a Lexus station wagon.) Perhaps that was John himself with his Chinese Assult rifle. I hear Rather is investigating...or was that drinking away his sorrows? I can't remember.

I bought battlefront. I only play the old-new school maps. (Galactic Civil War) I must say, even though it is just a "Star Wars 1942" it's pretty darn fun. It is the most starwars, starwars game I have played since the x-wing series. Gameplay is very true to the feel of what I think a starwars ground battle would feel like. (minus "Lord Vader" running around slashing rebels, and the presence of starfighters in a football field sized battleground) The "Lord Vader" part was pretty funny though. It made me laugh.

I recommend it. If you want to mix it up starwars style that is. If you don't, don't bother.

SSH isn't much better here's the downlo: Last year we logged into the linux server at school. After logging in, we changed our passwords. A day or too later, our server was taken over by a hacker. Cause? SSH was only encrypting the orginal logon. After that it wasn't doing smeg. SO with our new passwords all the hacker had to do was lookup usernames in the e-mail direcotry and viola! They were in. Isn't security phun?

Strangely NearScape, they basically did find Vader's implants in the dumpster. When General Greivous gets toasted his parts are recycled to fix up Anakin after his lava surfing fiasco.

Thanks Nearscape!
That's what I am saying. Now, I suggest, Peter, you watch the film Zatoichi at the Downer theatre tonight with me. (that's an open invitiation to EVERYONE, I will be at the DOWNER at 7:15) There you see a man who is both old AND blind, and his mad skillz make even obi-wan at his best look like the most flaccid dandy around.
Again Doucou is really old, like at least in his sevendies, if not eighties (I don't know for sure) and not only CAN he use his lightsaber, he DEMANDS it to be used as the measure of his mad skillz. (against two of the most powerful jedi around, at ONCE, no less!) So to say that Obi's mad skillz just deteriorated doesn't make sense, and to say that vader would not be so nimble because of his 'delecate condition' is also quite nonsensical. When I first saw Vader as a young man, I didn't think, 'what a feeble beaten down character', or anything like that. I thought 'what a badass'. If they are going to play up the sabre battle, and Vader as an old man (of all of 40, 18 years still need to pass I think) past his prime, that really sucks. (you would have thought that Obi would also want to TEACH Luke, a very YOUNG man, some of those 1337 skillz, if he was TRAINING him, after all, he taught Anakin those very same SKILLZ, didn't he? Did his training style greatly vary? Guess so.)
Now, Peter, I hate to show you up in your Star Wars knowlege, but in my sourcebooks (back when I had sourcebooks and CARED) there are characters that have CUT ONE OR MORE OF THEIR ARMS OFF so they can get implants that wield lightsabers without the force. Kinda like a rogue jedi. So the thought that he would be less because of his implants is quite the farce. I thought you would have known about that... ;)

So, in conclusion, there is no possible way for episode 3 to match up to episode 4 in ANY WAY. Unless they implement both the 'Mind Erasure Bomb', 'Anti-Technology Luddite Assault', and now also the 'Mad Skillz Disrupter Ray'.

New title for episode IV, "Grumpy Old Jedi".

Everyone come and see Zatoichi with me tonight. 7:15. Downer. Be there.

B_W

Posted by: nearscape Posted on: Wednesday September 22 2004 10:06am
that doesn't fly, because Dooku is "getting old" in ep II and he's still got the moves. and remember how screwed up George's timeline is, Obi-Wan is supposedly only like 10 years older in episode IV than he is in II (as is Anakin, which is even more hillarious). So, you've really got someone in their 30's (Vader) fighting someone in their 40's (Kenobi), give or take half a decade. They're both younger than, say, Michael Jordan or Jackie Chan, who needless to say are not feeble despite their age.

It must be all those years of being Jedi, doing all that sitting around blind and ignorant, that really broke them down.

The fanboys also say it's because "Vader's half robot", but George blew that one too. Those rolling assault droids are pretty nimble, why not use a little of that technology to "beef up" ol' toasty Vader? He's like second-in-command of the Universe, and they give him the crappiest implants they can find laying in a dumpster?

Posted by: Peter Posted on: Wednesday September 22 2004 9:24am
Sad to say, Mr. Whisky, Obi-Wan's "Mad Skillz" have not been updated. The fight is the same as ever...except for the new scene in which the two combatants stop fighting for a second and do a shot of gin before continuing to fight again. But it does make sense that the Kenobi/Darth Vader fight is slower...Kenobi is getting old and Vader is mostly Kentucky Fried Human!

Posted by: Big_Whisky Posted on: Wednesday September 22 2004 12:20am
I will buy battlefront. For that reason alone.

Now, Peter, comment on my comments!!! I want to know if they upgraded Obi's Mad SKILLZ!!! They better have...because otherwise....

B_W

Posted by: CrowScape Posted on: Tuesday September 21 2004 11:56pm
Battlefront may well be the best SW game ever made for one reason and one reason only: you get to shoot Ewoks in the face.

Posted by: nearscape Posted on: Tuesday September 21 2004 6:17pm
regarding Battlefront, what does everyone think? I'm hesitant because I'm already planning on purchasing T:V, Joint Operations, and Moonbase Commander. Adding more to the shopping list isn't realistic, it's already too long.

Actually, what would everyone think of swapping Joint Ops out for DF: Black Hawk Down? Joint Ops is definitely much cooler, however:
1) DF:BHD is far cheaper
2) DF:BHD runs much better on common hardware
3) We already know how to play it from the last LAN

In addition, here's an interesting bit of information, which might explain why Half-Life 2 has been delayed for years:
www.gamespot.com/news/2004/09/20/news_6107712.html
They've been busy hiring lawyers and preparing paperwork, when they should be working.

Posted by: Peter Posted on: Tuesday September 21 2004 4:57pm
Justin, what do you think about adding SW:Battlefront to the list of games at the LAN? The game appears to be multiplayer. Just a thought.

Wow. That's wierd. I wonder why he would keep screwing with that sweet action? I mean, he did it, then he did it again, now the third time? Think it through George!

> Han and Greedo now shoot at the same time. Han ducks his head out of the way better.
--So, let me get this straight, so Han goes from blowing that moth[er] away, to firing after he shoots, to them both shooing at the same time? Why? Isn't them shooting at the same time just as bad as Han shooing first? If someone is holding a fine piece on me, I have full rights to crack him one in the crotch, and that's just what Han did. I don't get it.

> Obi-Wan's lightsaber during the duel with Vader has been improved so that you no longer get the > old "light stick" effect.
--I liked obi wan's lightsaber, but here's a quick point I just thought of, were his 'mad skillz' also upgraded? Because he isn't dancing around in episode 4 like he is in 1 and 2. I mean, the count put up a pretty good fight, and he is old, why can't obi (or vader for that matter) in episode 4? (answer: BECAUSE THAT's NOT HOW YOU FIGHT WITH A LIGHTSABER) New title for episode III 'How Obi-Wan and Vader lost their MAD LIGHTSABER SKILLZ...bitch.'.

> Luke's yell from the Special Editions as he falls down the chasm on Cloud City has been removed >again.
THANK THE MAKER!!! Finally a good move. Way to go old no-neck!

>The matte lines around the Rancor have been improved making the composite look better.
--You know, I was checking out some of that hot action in a commercial, and the AT-ATs and other model effect look so blanking sweet! I mean that's way better than only the best CG today. I must say.

>Naboo is now shown as one of the planets celebrating the defeat of the Empire complete with >Gungans.
--Ummm...yeah. Isn't there a WAR going on still? They should just remove that whole portion outright, unless you want to add a little bit where stormtrooper swoop in and kill the lot. There is still an EMPIRE out there and about a THOUSAND star destroyers waiting to pounce after all. And shouldn't they give some mention to all that other sh*t in some other way to provide some kind of CONTINUITY??? Naw. No need for that. They should CG the GREVIOUS GRIEVES from General Grevious on Han's Hands or something, just to give it a little more 'validation'. You know?

>The ghost of old Anakin Skywalker at the end of the movie has been replaced with the image of a >young Anakin (Hayden). Possible Explanation: Your ghostly form only appears as the last time you >were on the light side of the force.
--BOO!!! They don't show YODA eight feet tall, or Obi-Wan as pipe toking Ewin, and even if that light side arguement is true, shouldn't Vader's death bed recantation be enough? Or can't you be forgiven for your sins. And was Hayden even light side at all? He was pretty pissy most of the time as a Jedi. If piss = dark forces, it's no wonder he is the best.

No, Big_Whisky.....I am your father's brother's nephew's cousin's former roomate!

Yes...It is true (not the part above). George has made those changes that I have outlined earlier to the DVD release coming out this Tuesday. In your words, he HAS "screwed with the action again".

P.S. I am so 1337!

Greetings,
Wait, General Calimitous is really Mr. Placas, the Lituanian Delight? Oh my, this is interesting news indeed!!!!

Now, I am a little confused. Have these changes been made to the DVD content to-be-realeased this Tuesday, or are these things you would have liked them to do? I can't beleive they would screw with the action again?!?! Let me know.

One more thing. I propose that since the LAN action won't be starting till the Saturday of the next event, we hold a special "COSTUME NIGHT" friday night. The costumes don't have to be good, or even all that costume-ee, but just a character of your own choice. Perhaps we could even dress like our LAN characters, I could be Big_Whisky, Lucky Jim could dress as Johnney Courage, etc. It's just a crazy thought by crazy me.

Later all,
Whiksy

This Tuesday will mark a momentous time for Star Wars fans (and though this post should probably be on the pulgaritrap site, I have decided to post it here to get your feedback and opinions on the issues). As everyone is no doubt aware, the DVDs coming out on Tuesday are not the Original Trilogy, nor are they the 1997 Special editions of the trilogy. Instead, GL has given us "The Ultimate Trilogy" (now this is not the church sanctioned term, just something that the boys and I have been tossing about in the rectory....but doesn't scream "Buddy Christ"...oops! Sorry...wrong movie). For those of you not aware of this point, I have outlined the changes below by movie:

A New Hope
- Han and Greedo now shoot at the same time. Han ducks his head out of the way better.
- The CGI Jabba of the Special Editions has been changed to the better model from Episode 1
- When Ben Kenobi turns down the Tractor Beam power on the Death Star, the writing is now in Aurabesh.
- The back of the Detention Bay has been made longer.
- Obi-Wan's lightsaber during the duel with Vader has been improved so that you no longer get the old "light stick" effect.

Empire Strikes Back:
- "Old Monkey Eyes" Emperor, Clive Revell - he had monkey's eyes composited over his own in the original version of Empire to make him look more inhuman, has been replaced by Ian McDiarmid (Palpatine in ROTJ and the prequels) including new dialogue that proves the Emperor knows that Luke is Vader's son (kinda spoils the end of Empire, doesn't it?).
- Boba Fett's voice has been replaced with that of Temura Morrison(Jango Fett from AOTC).
- Luke's yell from the Special Editions as he falls down the chasm on Cloud City has been removed again.

Return of the Jedi:
- The matte lines around the Rancor have been improved making the composite look better.
- When Darth Vader is revealed, his eyebrows have been digitally removed and his eye color has been changed to Blue to better match Hayden Christianen.
- Naboo is now shown as one of the planets celebrating the defeat of the Empire complete with Gungans.
- The ghost of old Anakin Skywalker at the end of the movie has been replaced with the image of a young Anakin (Hayden). Possible Explanation: Your ghostly form only appears as the last time you were on the light side of the force.

Let the discourse begin!

As for the typewriter discussion, we all know that CBS is a very reputable news organization, and that they would never want to report on something that would perhaps be 'bias' or 'false', and I am sure that if these documents were indeed faked, they must have been planted by Republicans to try and lure the news media into making a very believable and understandable mistake to discredit them.
But I don't believe this to be the case, because, after all, if such an error did occur, I am sure Dan Rather would be on the news that night and give a formal apology for reporting on false information.

*cough*

A misunderstanding then. You were just saying it was better for CBS's story to go with the typewriter repairman versus all the other experts because they disagreed, not that the typewriter repairman was right while everyone else was wrong, right?

As weird as it sounds, a typewriter repairman might be the best expert in this case as everyone else is saying that it'd be impossible to produce this on a typewriter.

It's been fun today. I've never seen a black hole before, so it's really interesting to see CBS's integrity being sucked into one. In order to defend the memos they've brought forward a new expert. Now, could this be a typography expert, or a forgery expert, perhaps? There are many out there with things to say on the matter. Nope, they choose to bring forward a typewriter repair man. It's completely comical.

Found this while working on an asp.net bug that i have found, or should i say feature. It seems that asp.net has a tendancy to write diferent html 4.0 code that doesnt work, if there is a non ie browser requesting the page. so far it is only cosmetic, but still frustrating.

Highly insightful view on the current state of the new "browser wars".

I don't think that this move is necessary for Firefox, it's already gaining a lot of new users (up to 13.7% from 8.2% in January according to w3scools statistics: www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_stats.asp). If Mozilla keeps out of the proprietary stuff and instead helps developing the standard work, web developers will soon have to take standards over the ActiveX solutions and that will in turn increase the usefulness of Firefox.

Disclaimer: The w3school stats are probably skewed towards web developers and early movers, but still indicate trends.

yes, MATA pretty much said "fuck it" and didn't hire anyone. One of the problems is that the summer classes have had poor attendance, but it usually picks up as the weather goes south. And why would IV hire anyone, when they can just have Dave work an extra 30 hours a week for free?

Posted by: CrowScape Posted on: Friday September 10 2004 9:49am
No, I bash the BBC for its entire coverage of Gulf War II in addition to that instance. The American forces were incompetent and easily being held back by the Iraqi forces? That's reporting on the level of Moham-med Saeed al-Sahaf's "they're commiting suicide at the gates." No, I will not listen to the BBC for anything that may relate back to the US, I'd be crazy to trust it.

Posted by: Peter Posted on: Friday September 10 2004 9:02am
Crow, despite incidents such as the one you mentioned, the BBC is still the most reliable source of news in the world. It is the one way to get out from under the practice of "manufactured consent" exhibited by the news networks of the United States. However, to truly ascertain the truth, it is necessary to follow contingent stories from numerous sources. Then and only then will the truth present itself. Don't bash BBC just for an isolated incident that sullied what is reknowned as the best broadcast journalistic sources on the planet. After all...by that reasoning you shouldn't trust any news source since they have all been found to have their corrupt points!

Posted by: CrowScape Posted on: Friday September 10 2004 12:04am
adam: You do realize that the BBC has been caught multiple times fabricating stories, right? You remember "sexing up" the documents? The head of the BBC resigned over it.

Wow.. I've been slacking on keeping up here.. ::slaps myself:: Now, ironically, had I kept up on reading like I should have, it wouldn't have taken me 3 tries this morning to get the trivia question at Caribou. Why? The questions was ::drumroll:: "Which company produced more copies of ET than it had console on the market?" My guesses were Coleco, Intellevision and then after the guy said to think mainstream, Atari.

Peter.. Speaking of e-mails, I thought the PT updates were resuming this week. And as I've said a thousand times before I'M AVAILABLE TO HELP OUT! I have some free CPU cycles I can donate to the project.

As for CrowScape, I've long stopped believing what the news says.. I still watch it, but not religiously like I had. If I want more credible news than the networks, I usually turn to the BBC or NPR as Fox, MSNBC and friends are jokes.

JB.. If I haven't said it yet, I'm in for the LAN party, of course, it depends on wheter or not I have a job or not by then (as a job might dictate working on the weekend or something like that)... Speaking of that, did they just say "fuck it" and not hire anyone over at MATA or did they do what everyone else has been doing and reject me with no letter or anything? (If they'd like a new resume or something, I have one and I can stick it on my FTP server or mail it in or whatever). I probably won't have a gaming capable machine by then, though... That's one of the things I plan on buying once I do land a job. (So if anyone has reccomendations, I'm all ears!)

Quickly, in case anyone's wondering, I've sent out about 150 resumes so far, been rejected by IV Media (Whiskey, can you do anything for me?), Midland Video (well, pretty much every production house in Milwaukee), WISN-TV, MTV Networks, several in Chicago, many with no response and now my latest ones waiting for rejection are for a CG Op position @ WFTX-TV in Ft. Meyers, FL, a TD position @ WLUK-TV in Green Bay, and a couple of different positions at WTMJ-TV, though Havice forwarded one of them to me, so I'm hoping by mentioing that in the cover letter that helps my chances. I'm also probably sending stuff to a TV station in ::puts on Ksobiech voice:: Peoria, IL tomorrow.

Ok.. I've bored you guys enough now.

Well, today is Render Day. Trying to track footage with a 3:2 pulldown is kind of a beotch. While my computer wails and languishes in agony, I shat out a schedule for the current event. Check it out and let me know if I missed anything. Please make arrangements to purchase Joint Operations and download Tribes:Vengeance before the gathering.

IV Whisky, I'm afraid your last statement doesn't make sense. If Episode IV contains Wookies, and Wookies are in The Pulgari Trap, that doesn't mean that Peter is "influencing" George Lucas. No, it doesn't "occur in reverse". One work is original, the other is derivative. To imply otherwise regarding games is quite ludicrous.

You may not be aware of this, but the Tribes games are part of the "Starsiege" universe, which spans about a dozen games and has one of the most developed settings in the history of game development. While "plot" didn't really matter in the first 2 games, it matters in the new one because it has a single player, and it is a prequel. Things are the way they are for an reason, to fit into the established fiction, available here:
www.starsiegeuniverse.com/timeline/fulltimeline.php
In case you're wondering why the new vehicles and armors look kind of "retro". We'll learn more when the single player is released. And while games like Earthsiege and Stellar 7 share the heritage, needless to say Halo is absent from the timeline and is quite irrelevant from a concept standpoint. I don't expect to discuss it any further. Enjoy the game, and that's fine. I enjoyed it myself on the PC, because they addressed all of my issues brilliantly: they lifted the resolution limitations, they added well-designed maps, and allowed the player to chose their controls. Voila! A Fun Game emerges. But innovative? Influencial? No way, no how. You've moved beyond opinion there to make a bold claim, and it's simply incorrect.

Posted by: Big_Whisky Posted on: Wednesday September 8 2004 12:58pm
No time, but one quick correction:

the first tribes looked like tribes
the latest tribes lookes like HALO.

yes tribes influenced HALO, (with their vehicles and whatnot) but the same is occuring in reverse. That is why I said that now they influence each other.

Can't read the rest now! I am sure more good statements will come about later on when I need a break!!!

Posted by: nearscape Posted on: Wednesday September 8 2004 11:03am
i left you a voice mail asking for more info. anyway, my MATA classes are cancelled this week, so my evenings are mostly free, but it doens't sound like Dave's free until the weekend.

Back to the bitching! A few points of clarification...first you are correct about that writer having his head up his ass regarding online PC gaming, however I believe he was referring to PS2 online and Xbox Live in particular. Living with one of the biggest Xbox Live fanboys on the planet, and having witnessed him actually using it for what it's designed maybe twice in 2 years, I think there might be something to that complaint.

Now for where you are incorrect.
Anyone who knew me back in the day can testify that I was a huge console fan, buying pretty much everything that came out from '85 thru the Dreamcast. Did I change? No, the scene changed. If I changed, then I wouldn't still treasure and proudly display all that old crap, I probably would've sold it. In fact, we emulated a little Pilotwings and Zero Wing last night and it made my week. But ever since Playstation took over, console gaming provided less and less of the "fun". Cocks and Jocks started playing games like "Tekken" and "Madden", and most new console games are about fighting (SC) or driving (Burnout). Maybe being in a real fatal accident takes the pleasure out of simulating them all the time. Millions of people love it. Millions of people also love Dwight Yoakam, the NBA, and Survivor. And I don't. I guess I'm just a fucktard.

You gaming history is quite erroneous. Tribes was on shelves before the first X-Box prototype was ever designed. Halo innovated exactly nothing. The same weapon swapping style was present in ROTT and others, circa 1994. Time to move on, folks. Derivative of derivative of derivative. GTA1 was a PC game, and little more than a clone of Carmageddon. Fortunately, this is no longer true, and that particular franchise has come a long way. Vice City was the last Playstation game that I really enjoyed, and I look forward to San Andreas. Here is some robust, non-linear gameplay. I don't have a problem with that, but I am saddened by how rare it is becoming.

You also missed my point regarding those defunct companies. Consider the possibility that your "perfectly executed genre games" would never have received funding, if not for innovative classics like Mortal Combat and King of Fighters, which took risks, and created massive pre-existing audiences for the endless clones. Because of that, Soul Calibur 2 was a "sure thing", and the developers were given enough time and money to do things right. If only 3 people played REZ, then why are millions of dollars being sunk into clones, like Amplitude, to this very day? It's games like that and DDR that saved the mythical "arcade" in Japan, and I'm afraid there's more than 3 people living there. Japanese arcades innovated, and the dinosaur survived. American arcades failed to innovate, and they died. If Microsoft/Sony console developers continue to fail to innovate, the same thing could happen.

You're sorely mistaken if you think that E.T. single-handedly brought down the Atari empire. It was quite the opposite I've heard. Not one title, but the fact that they released far too many titles that were similar. As we roll into Tekken 6 and Madden 12 and GTA 5...are you saying that history couldn't possibly repeat itself?

Posted by: Peter Posted on: Wednesday September 8 2004 9:35am

*click, click* Oh, please ignore those gun loading sounds, i'm just still at I V. ;)

Mr. Scape that's near,
No harsh inferance intended, but seriously you talking about 'console games' is like a priest talking about 'sexual ethics'. He's never done it, (we think) doesn't want to do it, (we hope) but yet want's to tell you 'how it is'.

One of the things the gentleman in the article failed to even mention (as far as I can remember from my quick read) was PC gaming. At all. All he said was: "Do you know anyone who games online? Not me!", and completly ignored the entire PC online/lan party/mmog genre games. Dissapointing.

No this gentleman was striking below the belt. There are plenty of other innovative console games, reciently - Red Dead Revolver, less reciently - the original GTA, or to a lesser extent True Crime. Very fun, and very different. (well, not anymore, because now they 'have been done', but how quickly we forget how innovative they really were even HALO in it's day very innovative, now most FPS's including 'tribes' emulates it's styling. [numbers on guns, etc, the same could be said the other way I understand, but it just goes to show how far consoles have come]) And of course let's completly forget the fun factor of a perfectly excecuted genre game like Soul Caliber II, which I and about a zillion other people found phenominal. It plays so smooth, and so light, it only takes a moment to learn, but much much longer to master. Not to mention the constant improvement in some titles, like Burnout => Burnout II => Burnout III. Each iteration is getting progressively better and more robust. The third will come with a hundred crash zones, from IIs thirty. That alone is worth the cost, not to mention the vastly improved physics and 'fun'.

Perhaps you (general you, not anyone in particular) are too young to remember the demise of the ATARI, but I was there. I have the collection to prove it, I sponsored it's purchase 83-88. (same with my dying APPLE II, and I still have both) The reason the ATARI failed, was because it invested far to heavily in E.T. which took all of ATARI's capital (there are still millions of copies of it buried out in the desert somewhere) and thus doomed it to failure. Not because people outgrew games, or somehow were 'tired' of them. If they did all they could do on the 2600, they had the 7800 waiting, they just couldn't distribute it. If they had, (and supported it) they would have definalty postponed this 'game crash of '84. They just didn't have the capital to sustain themselves. (same reason why TRILOBYTE died. Put all their eggs in "The Eleventh Hour". And that only half sucked.
As far as companies like SEGA that died, well, they deserved it. SEGA lost a HUNDRED BILLION dollars in it's last year. Most of their titles, weren't 'innovative' but rather 'imported from Japan', and while we might find them interesting, most people do not. And they were not very good games either. Seaman? I tried it, and said, "what the FU*C am I doing?!?!?! I just want a virtual Nimoy Simulator!!" REZ, Space Channel 5, Shenmu, the Ferarri Simulator, 'innovative games', that made about three people happy. (that Ferarri simulator and Shenmu cost a TON) And Nintendo, well, it only has it's franchises left, so innovation is definatly NOT their cup of tea. Seriously, SNK? Everyone, please write in with pleasant SNK memories. I want to hear them all! Tell me all about your long nights with 'king of fighers' (at home), or 'viruta fighter' (at home), or 'samuari showdown' (at home), or, well, whatever you got! (Crystalis was fun.)

Anyway, enough of my ranting. Justin, nothing personal, but you are a PC person all the way! I don't know if you ever owned a nintendo as a child, but I doubt you enjoyed it if you did. Something tells me you were the kind of guy kicking it with the Wolfenstein and Corrordor 13, and skipping the happy mushroom hour. ;) If not, you've changed man. ;P

Time for me to get back to WORK!!!

P.S. There were these places called 'arcades'. Really. I've been there. ;)

Posted by: nearscape Posted on: Tuesday September 7 2004 5:20pm
while I agree with you for the most part, whisky, I think you are inferring a few things that aren't really said in the article. he doesn't hate games, he loves them, but he sees things heading in the same direction they were before the last crash, around '83-'84. That's the key, we're to young to remember that this has already happened, so it may seem incredulous to us, but that doesn't make it impossible.

it's hard to deny some of the signs he brings up. New gameplay innovations are rare, basically extinct in the current consoles. in the current generation, since PS2 came out, I can recall 2 innovative games: N.U.D.E., and DOA: Extreme Beach Volleyball. that's pretty sad, considering that the former could even be considered a derivative of the old Dreamcast experiment, Seaman, and the latter is part of a franchise. The only interesting thing on the horizon is Fable. Basically, since Sega got out of hardware, things have been stagnant, creatively. The majority of games are sequels. Graphics progress, sure, but far slower than they did in the '80s and '90s. We're approaching the point where console graphics exceed the capability of mainstream televisions, so that train is about to grind down.

Before you load those firearms, consider that we're only bitching because we want our favorite hobby to "be all it can be". Whining sometimes instigates progress, where complacency and quiet acceptance accomplishes nothing.

I think the problem, at least with consoles, is that since Microsoft and Sony have taken over, there's no longer any risk involved. Neither of these companies make videogames as their primary business! They are so huge and diversified, that they don't have to try. The videogame industry was built on risk and crazy ventures, by companies that all lived and burned out on pure innovation, like SNK, 3DO, 3DFX, Sega, and Nintendo. None of these companies had business models that were profitable, but we owe everything we have to them, all our precious gaming hardware and genres. They took risks, they made decisions based on gaming intuition. Sony and Microsoft make decisions based on safety, and the bottom line.

The author points out that the next wave of consoles are merely PCs with crappy controllers, complete with all the assholes of online gaming, the constant patches, and the relentless hacking. When any hobby goes mainstream, there's always a price. When cinema went mainstream, most of the innovation disappeared under the glitter. Remeber learning about all the Poverty Row studios in Soley's class? How about 90% of films made before 1960 are lost forever? the 10% that remains is often the lowest common denominator, and I fear gaming is almost there as well.

The one thing I'm not worried about is PC gaming. It must be cheaper to develop, because there's still risks being taken and innovative games like Moonbase Commander being made on slim budgets. Using Modding tools, a single person can develop a game idea using only their free time. That won't happen over at Sony and Microsoft. I don't see LAN parties going anywhere anytime soon. Blizzard is still making things that are fun. id is still making shitty games that sell hojillions of copies, so at least they're keeping the PC technology way ahead of Sony and Microsoft. So is it doomsday? Hell no. But things definitely ain't as interesting as they used to be.

Posted by: Big_Whisky Posted on: Tuesday September 7 2004 3:56pm
I read that guy's article, and I don't agree at all with his points. I don't play games because they are new, I play them becasue they are fun. I have always had video games in my life, since I was a wee little baby, and it just so happened that as I grew up, so did the games.
I don't know if this guy's memory was too feeble, or if the grips of the drug binges he probably participated in completly dulled his senses, but let me remind you and him that there were these places called 'arcades', where people played really cool games 'outside' of the home. (or today, the LAN) Now when these 'arcades' were in existance, if you wanted to play 'games' at home, you had to take a massive hit on graphics and sound. Did that stop me from playing games at home? No! Even though in comparison they SUCKED, I still greatly enjoyed them. And I still do enjoy them, (my atari is still a hit) and so do many other people [enjoy their old-school games]. That's why WE STILL BUY THOSE OLD GAMES today. (in their many forms, midway arcade, that old school stick thing)

I play games, not because they are the 'coolest', but because they are the most enjoyable. Do I think game manufacturers are a little too stuck in their genres? Yes. Do I care? Not really. There are games that push the envelope, are fun, and are very 'well thought out'. I will play those. There are also the games that are fun to play with other people. I will play those too. With people.
Also, look at us now, all playing our games. Did people our age back in the day play their games? Some did, but not like they are now. Were the games marketed for adults as they are now? Not really. (some were, but not like GTA) Did the money spent on video games out gross the money spent on games? Nope. And what's with this guy claiming that if I play my games at 40 I will be 'lame'. Whatever. Wait for our generation to GET THAT OLD and you will see. Just like him watching his 'movie' we will still play our 'games'.

Boo hoo to that guy. And why does he have to rain on my parade? Everything I love, someone has to hate. It's just the way of the world I guess...I hope he get's hit with that car though. That would be sweet.

Now if I take my revenge on mankind like I have been planning, well, no more games for anyone. But that's another story.

Whisky out.

P.S. just because nintendo is sucking it up, that doesn't mean ALL GAMES ARE GOING DOWN. whatever. Nintendo sucks, what can I say?

just a moment of laughter erupted when i found a little easter egg on windows server 2003, apairently when a service is nolonger detected on a system, it records the service in the logs as being tombstoned as compared with, stopped, inactive, or dead.

so to make the comment complete, the log read that "justin bosar : messanger : tombstoned 9/03/04"

just food for thought

Action UT will be at the next LAN.

Also, I've got the Tribes:Vengeance Beta running now, and it's playable just fine on both my machines (state of the art in 2001, baby!). The netcode could be improved though, once you start hitting 16+ players you start noticing spinfusor lag. Some of the maps are very small, which will probably be good for the LAN, and there is one the demo that is big enough to be worthy of the Tribes franchise. The vehicles very easy to use, much like UT Onslaught. The "Ball" gametype is a great blend of my favs from UT and Tribes 2, "Bombing Run" and "Team Rabbit 2", although it lacks the style focus of the last one. Much to my suprise (and pleasure), they revived "Find and Retrieve" and are calling it "Fuel". Standard Rabbit is in, and extremely fast on these maps, especially with the grappling hook.

So far, even in the beta, it receives my patent-pending "Doesn't Suck" certification. I'll post specific complaints later, but overall, it's hard to escape the feeling that it's a UT mod, and not a new game. A little disappointing for us old-skoolers, but at least it reduces the learning curve to something more palatable for a LAN party. Heck, even Intrigue hopped in for a while yesterday, with minimal whining and crying. It's more like Tribes 1 with good graphics than a successor to the heinously complex, and often slow Tribes 2. Since we'll no doubt be buried in extra maps as soon as it goes retail, my hopes are high.

I guess I should put in my two cents into this mess too. WHERE's THE BORRSK? I mean, all these films, and the Bothans barrely get a mention? Not to mention lack of BORRSK! Heck, I hardly get any fact time on the Pulgari site, and when I do, it's that lightweight!?!? I've had enough of this 'spoo' as that Placas would say. BWWHAHAHWAH!

My votes go for "General Calamitous" and "An End to Anakin's Whining", respectively. And George better be paying attention, or my life has no meaning!

Posted by: CrowScape Posted on: Saturday September 4 2004 2:52pm
I prefer General Specific, but that one was already taken. How about General Panic, or General Orders, or General Assembly, or General Hospital, or even General Electric!

Posted by: Big_Whisky Posted on: Saturday September 4 2004 2:13pm
Let's use the breakdown that Peter provided to break down his comments breaking down the previous comments Big_Whisky made about Peter's comments about the brand new 'General Grevious' character appearing suddenly at the end of 'Clone Wars' and the perhaps not forthcoming 'Star Wars Episode III, Revenge of the Sith.'

1. If this 'General Grevious' let the droid armies, shouldn't he have led them in episode 1? Perhaps, because that was such and incompetent action, they fired whoever led them before, and hired Grevious, but shouldn't he have then been in episode II? I am so confused. I applaud Gary for gettin the heck outta this mess.

2.It's not that I don't want to see such characters as Lando, Tarkin, and Organa again, I really do, (in fact I would have liked to see them perhaps in Episode I, or at most Episode II, because that's what I really came to see, but I digress) but that wasn't my point.

My point was that the NAMES themselves are better than 'Grevious'. I mean, what kind of a throwaway name is that? Is he going to take off his 'Grevious Grieves' and bitch slap Anakin around? (that would be cool) Is he going to Grieve about all the Grevious things he has done? I can piss out a flood of names that are just as good. Here we go!

General Egregious, General Flagrant, General Heinous, General Onerous, General Malcontent, General Malleable, General Deplorable, General Calamitous, General Inclement, General Rigor, General Vexatious, General Debilitate, General Enervated, General Flaccid, General Impuissant, General Languid, General Prostrate, General Insubstantial, General Nebbish, General Vacillate, General Impotent, General Invertebrate, General Choleric, General Exacerbate, General Turbulent, General Effete, General Infecund, General Gripe, General Grumble, General Grouse, General Snivel, General Depreciate, General Clamor

Peter, feel free to use any or all of those in whatever fan-fiction you want from this day forth. It's my gift to you. ;)

3. All CG? Great. George is do good at that. (making Yoda jump off the walls? Come on! He's old! He used to be eight feel tall! Did he jump off walls when he was YOUNG??? I don't think so!)

4. Yeah, he recycles the BAD ones. "Revenge of the Jedi", would have been cool, because as we all know good Jedi can't (or more importantly shouldn't) get revenge. That's exactly what Luke was after in Jedi, revenge. He didn't take it though, and that would have made the film more INTERESTING. Now we all know what the Sith have to do in this film, kick ass.

However, why will they have to get revenge? It seems like the only one with any power is Palpatine. (possibly Anakin, but he's already half dark, and the count, but he's evil too) Why do they need revenge, all they have to do is take power? Will Anakin take revenge on himself? Who will the Sith be taking revenge against? Themselves? The ineffective, impotent Jedi council? They don't need to take revenge against them, they need to kick their ass!

So, in conclusion, 'Revenge of the Sith' makes not one bit of sense, because no revenge needs to be taken. This title was used only because George needed a title and he just so happened to have this one lying around. (which is where most of his ideas come from, anything that won't cut into his 'donut time'.)

I propose some new, better titles:
"The Sith Kick Ass!"
"The Jedi Get Kicked...in the ASS...by the Sith!"
"An End to Anakin's Whining"
"An End to this Crappy Once Cool Franchise"
"Let's Find Something Better to Look Forward Too"
"ASS!!!"

Sorry Peter, this film will suck. I have pre-determined it, and have layed out my arguments. There is no other way to look at the data.

Posted by: CrowScape Posted on: Friday September 3 2004 5:00pm
The army wasn't destroyed in Episode II: that was simply the first battle. Of course, Lucas doesn't make it clear at all. That's why you need to see the "Clone Wars" animated series to have it make sense.

Posted by: nearscape Posted on: Friday September 3 2004 4:58pm
and another thing... if George actually paid attention to good movies, he might know that CG characters only work with good actors and good writing behind them (see: Gollum). Since good writing is obviously not an option, you'd think he'd pay special attention to the casting. But again, his track record in that department is just as bad.

Posted by: CrowScape Posted on: Friday September 3 2004 4:58pm
Wayne Pygrim is in Episode III? Crap! Now I have to go see it...

The Clone Wars episodes used to be freely available on line.

Posted by: nearscape Posted on: Friday September 3 2004 4:53pm
Wayne Pygrim rocks, that I might have to see. He has an amazing talent for taking the drug-induced nonsense the Farscape writers came up with, and somehow making it enjoyable to watch.

When you say "droid army", so you mean the trade federation soldiers those bug guys were making? weren't they destroyed in episode II? don't tell me Palpatine now has a third army that he's using to fight his other armies for no reason. Boy, George's creativity never ceases to amaze.

MAY!!

Posted by: Peter Posted on: Friday September 3 2004 4:06pm
Let's use the breakdown provided by Big_Whisky to respond to his comments.

1) Can't provide an excuse for this one. George created this villain named "General Grievious" as the leader of the droid armies. It would have been nice to hear mention of his name earlier, but alas... For those of you who watched the CloneWars animated shorts on Cartoon Network, Grevious made a brief appearance in the last episode (episode 20) voiced by John DiMaggio (Futurama's "Bender"). If you have not seen these Clone War cartoons, let me know, I'd be happy to lend you a DVD copy. However, Count Dooku (played by Christopher Lee) will be back in Episode 3, so he technically doesn't count as a villain who is in one movie and is never mentioned again.

2)Fear not, lover of names such as Lando, Tarkin, and Organa! For two of those names are present in Episode 3. Jimmy Smits reprises his role as Bail Organa (Leia's adopted father) for Episode 3 (he was also shown briefly in Episode 2). Wayne Pygrim (better known to Farscape fans as "Scorpius") is playing a younger version of Tarkin. As for Lando, suffice to say he is restricted to selling cool malt beverages to the cast and crew that are "smooth...every time!"

3)Grevious, being completely CG like JarJar, was never on set, so no actor was hired. George is now just looking for just a voice (albeit an actor like Gary Oldman is more than just mere voice, but it would be nice to see him lend his talent to the movie). Also, Grevious, like his monosyllabic counterpart Darth Maul, has very little to say in the movie, thus not having a voice actor yet is not likely to affect the animation of many shots.

4) If you haven't already figured out, George recycles many ideas. The winged creatures envisioned to soar above the Tibbana gas mines by Ralph McQuarrie for Empire Strikes Back were worked into Attack of the Clones for Kamino. So in turn, the original title "Revenge of the Jedi" was replaced by Return of the Jedi in 1983 since revenge is not a Jedi concept, but is reused for "Revenge of the Sith" since revenge would be a Sith concept.

Do not discredit the film yet! It may be the first Star Wars movie with a PG-13 rating yet!

Posted by: Big_Whisky Posted on: Friday September 3 2004 3:22pm
What I think is more dissapointing, is:
1. They are introducing YET ANOTHER VILLAN which is NEVER HEARD FROM AGAIN in the third film.
2. His name is GENERAL GREVIOUS for goodness sake?!?! Whose writing this spoo? I mean, what were they thinking? What ever happened to great names like Thrawn, Tarkin, Lando, and Organa? Grevious???? What, will he make a 'grevious' error, and press the 'ERASE HISTORY' button? He better, because that is the only way I will see it!
3. They are still finding and losing CAST at this point? Shouldn't this film be DONE by MAY??? What kinda crack are they sucking on? Shouldn't they be consintrating on POST now?)
4. They just RECYCLED the name of the film, from a name they REJECTED twenty years ago. I mean, what did it get better with age or something?

I don't know boys, looks like some mighty slim pickings...

Upsetting news from the world of Star Wars (if the rumor is true). Gary Oldman, who had originally agreed to being the voice of General Grevious (the villain in Episode 3 "Revenge of the Sith"), is rumored to have cancelled this commitment. Two possible explanations are given: 1) Shooting for Batman Begins is over schedule and Oldman has a prior obligation on the film as Lt. Gordon, 2) Episode 3 is considered a non-SAG motion picture and thus union rules prevent Oldman from being in the film. At this time it is uncertain if the rumor is true. Disappointing indeed.

Apparently, the Res Life channel/ITS (Channel 99) on campus has discovered the wonder of media! Now the channel shows little propaganda films about life on campus and the wonders of Res Life and ITS! During one of the ITS propaganda films about the campus being "wired" (this isn't so much a film as a powerpoint slideshow set to narration), a brief Freudian slip provides a great deal of comedy. A slide comes up with the phrase, Having trouble hooking up to the internet? while showing a frustrated female student. The next slide (and where the humor really comes in) says, ITS CAN HELP YOU? (I'm sure that was supposed to be an exclamation mark instead of a question mark at the end, but it serves its purpose just the same!).

I took a hundred pictures + with four of those batteries, so it's not their fault. It might be that 'rapid' charger. If we use my much longer charger, they should work better. But I have already said all this, many, many times.

Posted by: Intrigue Posted on: Thursday September 2 2004 1:57pm
The mistery of the battery eating cammera, might have just been solved via this other battery type CRV-3 that provides 3v(2x1.5) in stead of 2.4(2x1.2) and replaces a pair of double AA batteries and is still rechargeable.

i am trying to find a good charger, roomer has it that you should get the charger and the batteries from the same manufacturer, not sure if that is true, but i thought that i would share wil you the knowledge that i have obtained.
